The advantages of our impregnation / waterproofing / proofing for natural stone

Our high-quality impregnation solutions for almost all types of natural stone not only guarantee considerably longer material durability thanks to the robust protective layer, but also offer many other convincing advantages; see below for an excerpt of the most important of these:

Effective stain protection

A well-maintained car with ceramic coating / ceramic sealant has a higher resale value. In the case of leased vehicles that are replaced after a few years, you benefit in particular from the long-lasting protective effect of a single sealant.

Weatherproof and UV-resistant

Thanks to the UV-stable impregnation / waterproofing / proofing, the natural stone is protected from the weather. This prevents the colors from fading and extends the service life, especially outdoors.

Water and dirt repellent

The water-repellent (hydrophobic) properties of the impregnation ensure that water and dirt are simply less able to adhere to the material and therefore simply roll off. This reduces the risk of water damage and also makes the stone much easier to clean.

Color deepening effect

The impregnation / waterproofing / stone sealing intensifies the natural colors of the stone and highlights its texture, resulting in a fresh and new look that is retained over the long term.

Food safe

Our impregnations are also ideal for sealing work surfaces, for example in kitchens, as they do not release any harmful substances and are therefore food-safe.

Room climate-preserving

Thanks to the impregnation / waterproofing / proofing, the natural stone remains breathable and can continue to absorb and release moisture. This makes a positive contribution to the indoor climate and the prevention of mold growth.

Compatible with underfloor heating

Even on floors with underfloor heating, the thermal conductivity is retained despite the optimized protection provided by the sealant, so that our products can also be used optimally for this purpose.

Longevity and durability

The impregnation / waterproofing / stone sealing increases the resistance of the stone and offers long-lasting protection, preserving the as-new and natural look for many years and reducing wear and tear on the material.

Simple care

Thanks to the impregnation / waterproofing / proofing, the maintenance effort is significantly reduced. Soiling is easier to remove and the stone retains its flawless condition for longer.

Thanks to state-of-the-art technologies, we can protect natural stone from a wide range of external influences and significantly extend its service life. The impregnation prevents the penetration of liquids and dirt without impairing the natural appearance or breathability of the stone. See the most common application examples of our natural stone impregnation below.

Stone impregnations for indoor use

Floors and worktops Our impregnations protect stone surfaces in various indoor areas from everyday wear and tear, including, for example:

  • Kitchen worktops: prevent the penetration of acidic foods, oils and grease and thus minimize the risk of permanent stains.
  • Living areas: Sensitive natural stone floors such as marble or slate are protected against wear, scratches and soiling, which significantly increases their service life.

Walls Stone impregnation also offers ideal protection for vertical surfaces such as walls or other large vertical stone structures, for example:

  • Bathroom walls: prevent mold growth and moisture build-up on natural stone or tile walls, keeping them hygienically clean and attractive.
  • Kitchen walls: protect against grease, steam and other soiling that can occur during cooking and be difficult to remove.

Tables and furniture Natural stone furniture such as tables, worktops or shelves also benefit from impregnation / waterproofing / proofing. They protect against stains, scratches and cracks caused by daily use and preserve the aesthetics of the stone for years to come.

Stone impregnations for outdoor use

Terraces and balconies

In outdoor areas, natural stone is particularly exposed to the effects of weathering. Impregnation / waterproofing / proofing protects stone slabs and tiles from moisture, frost and the effects of salt in winter. It also effectively prevents the formation of moss and algae, which makes maintenance considerably easier.

Facades

Facades Our impregnation / waterproofing / proofing offers long-term protection for natural stone facades. It protects the stone from air pollution, moisture and other environmental influences that can lead to weathering. As a result, the façade not only remains visually appealing, but also structurally intact.

Garden paths and squares

The use of stone impregnation also proves its worth in gardens. Stone paths and squares are protected from dirt and the effects of the weather, which also makes maintenance much easier.

Monuments and sculptures

Historical monuments and sculptures made of natural stone benefit from the protective effect of impregnation / waterproofing / proofing. Our solutions offer comprehensive protection against environmental influences such as exhaust fumes, moisture and dirt, protecting these valuable objects from weathering and preserving their original beauty in the long term.

What types of stone can be protected by impregnation / waterproofing / proofing?

Different natural stones have different properties that influence the effect and necessity of impregnation. Targeted impregnation protects the stones from external influences, preserves their natural beauty and extends their service life; here are some examples and special features:

Material

Material property

Special feature impregnation / waterproofing / proofing

Marble

porous, sensitive to acids

protects in particular against stains and discoloration, seals the surface deep in the pores

Granite

less porous, resistant to weathering

facilitates cleaning in particular, protects against moisture and weathering

Slate

fissile layered rock, sensitive to moisture

protects in particular against frost, moisture and weathering, preserves the natural structure

Limestone

porous, susceptible to acids and discoloration

preserves the natural look, protects against stains and maintains breathability

Sandstone

Very porous, absorbs water easily

offers protection against moisture, frost and salt in particular, ideal for outdoor use

Travertine

porous limestone with characteristic holes

Fills pores and protects against stains and wear in particular, without changing the appearance

Terracotta

High porosity, often used outdoors

protects in particular against moisture and weather, preserves the warm appearance of the material

Which is better: sealing or impregnation / waterproofing / proofing?

The decision between sealing and impregnating depends heavily on the specific requirements. Below you can see the most common advantages and disadvantages of each type of coating.

Sealing:

  • Advantages: Provides maximum protection against moisture, dirt and stains. Ideal for high-traffic areas or surfaces that are exposed to extreme loads.
  • Disadvantages: Changes the natural look and feel of the stone, as there is a visible protective layer.

Impregnation / waterproofing / proofing:

  • Advantages: Protects the stone deep in the pores without altering its natural look or feel. It is breathable, preserves the structure and ensures long-lasting protection while maintaining the original appearance.
  • Disadvantages: Offers somewhat less protection against very heavy use or particularly aggressive environmental influences compared to sealing.

For areas where the natural beauty and breathability of the stone are paramount, impregnation is the better choice. If maximum protection is a priority, it may make more sense to use a sealer.

Instructions for the application and care of natural stone impregnations

Step 1 - Preparing the substrate

The natural stone must be thoroughly cleaned before the impregnation / waterproofing / proofing is applied. Use a neutral cleaner and a soft brush to remove dirt, dust and other deposits as well as potentially old sealants. Then ensure that the stone is completely dry – a residual moisture content of less than 3% is ideal. A dry substrate guarantees optimum absorption of the impregnation / waterproofing / proofing and a long-lasting and optimum effect of the protection.

Step 2 - Applying the impregnation / waterproofing / proofing

The impregnation is applied evenly to the natural stone using a roller, brush or cloth. Ensure that the application is carried out at a temperature between +10 and +25 degrees Celsius.

For highly absorbent stones such as marble, it may be necessary to apply several coats, whereas one coat is often sufficient for less absorbent stones such as granite; check the impregnation protection after it has hardened and then decide whether a further coating is required.

Step 3 - Care of the impregnated natural stone

Regular care ensures that the impregnation / waterproofing / proofing lasts for a long time. Wipe the stone surface regularly with a damp cloth and mild cleaner, but avoid aggressive cleaning agents and abrasive materials. Acidic substances such as vinegar or citric acid can attack the impregnation, so it is important to use pH-neutral cleaners. Cleaning with high-pressure cleaners is also possible, as long as they do not clean with more than 60 bar pressure.

To avoid scratches, protect the stone from sharp or heavy objects by using soft underlays so as not to damage the protective layer. Check the impregnation / waterproofing / proofing regularly for wear and tear and renew it if necessary.

Particularly stressed surfaces should be treated more frequently. The best time for impregnation / waterproofing / stone sealing is immediately after laying the stone, and even before laying in the case of outdoor applications, in order to shorten drying times.

Proper impregnation / waterproofing / proofing reliably protects the natural stone and makes it much easier to maintain, so that you can enjoy its beauty for a long time.

How long does stone impregnation / stone sealing last?

The durability of a stone impregnation / waterproofing / stone sealing varies depending on various factors. Both the quality of the product used and the correct application are decisive for the duration of the protection. To maximize the longevity of the impregnation / waterproofing / proofing, the following aspects should be taken into account:

  • Stone type: Porous stones such as sandstone or limestone may require more frequent refreshing and multiple applications compared to less absorbent stones such as granite.
  • Exposure: In heavily frequented areas or where the material is exposed to chemical substances, the impregnation will wear off more quickly.
  • Application: An even and careful application ensures maximum protection duration.
  • Weather conditions: UV radiation and frost in outdoor areas can break down the impregnation more quickly.

Signs that the impregnation / waterproofing / proofing is weakening can be seen in different ways. Liquids penetrate the stone more quickly, which indicates that the stain resistance is decreasing. The stone also discolors more quickly and absorbs dirt more easily. In such cases, it is advisable to refresh the impregnation / waterproofing / stone sealing to restore the stone’s protection.
