PFC vs. PFC-free: What do we mean by this?

For those who value maximum environmental compatibility and health protection, PFC-free impregnations are a high-performance and sustainable solution. To better understand the difference between PFC and PFC-free impregnations, it is advisable to compare the two coating options:

PFC (perfluorinated and polyfluorinated chemicals)

PFCs are chemicals that are used in many traditional waterproofing agents. These agents provide effective protection against dirt, water and grease, which makes them particularly useful for coating textiles such as clothing, shoes, rucksacks, tents, awnings and convertible tops, but also materials such as glass or stone. PFCs are therefore highly effective, but extremely harmful to the environment and health. Toxic ingredients (depending on chain length) make the substance difficult to break down, leading to ecological and health problems.

PFC-free impregnation / waterproofing / proofing

In contrast, PFC-free impregnations / nano-waterproofing / waterproofing, such as those from Nano-Care®, offer an environmentally friendly alternative. These products provide similarly effective protection against unwanted deposits, but do not use harmful chemicals. PFC-free impregnations / waterproofing / waterproofing are healthier for the consumer and kinder to the environment. They are used in the same areas of application and ensure a more environmentally friendly solution without compromising on performance.

Our products

Thanks to our many years of experience and continuous expansion of our product range, we can offer surface sealants for almost all areas of application.

With the aim of maximizing environmental compatibility, Nano-Care® offers highly effective, PFC-free impregnation solutions that reliably protect materials from moisture and dirt without posing any health risks. Extensive research processes have enabled us to create a sustainable alternative to traditional impregnating agents containing PFCs.

The environmentally friendly formulas of our PFC-free impregnation solutions contain silicon dioxide instead of fluorine compounds and therefore not only offer excellent protection against moisture and soiling, but are also harmless to health.

There are also other advantages to our PFC-free impregnations, which we would like to explain in detail below.

The advantages of our PFC-free impregnation / waterproofing / proofing

Health and environmental protection – these are the most important advantages of the PFC-free nano-impregnation / nano-waterproofing solutions from Nano-Care®. Thanks to the innovative formula, which does not contain any harmful ingredients, these impregnation solutions are harmless to health, which is why they can also be used on materials that later come into contact with food. Furthermore, there is no need for additional protective equipment during application.

Function and protection – The PFC-free impregnations not only offer long-lasting and effective protection against dirt and water, but also impress with the breathable properties of the applied protective layer. Particularly in the case of textiles such as clothing, this ensures effective protection without altering wearer comfort. In addition, the ultra-thin, applied protective layer does not change the appearance of the material, but by smoothing the pores ensures that liquid cannot penetrate and rolls off the material. This not only extends the service life of the materials, but also ensures a long-lasting clean appearance.

Sustainability and certification – Our PFC-free products are certified by the “Öko Tex Eco Passport” or their food safety has been confirmed by independent laboratories. These certificates prove that the ingredients used in our products have no harmful effects on the health of consumers and are therefore demonstrably safe for people and the environment.

Application and durability – Thanks to the harmless ingredients of the PFC-free impregnations when cured, these products can be simply sprayed onto the material to be sealed without the user having to take any major protective measures. This ensures fast and even distribution of the impregnation / waterproofing / proofing as well as comprehensive and long-lasting protection.

Areas of application for our products

Nano-Care® impregnating agents are the perfect choice for making a wide range of textile materials waterproof and dirt-repellent. They can be used on a wide range of materials and products; here are a few examples:

How do I use the PFC-free waterproofing spray?

PFC-free impregnation / waterproofing / waterproofing is easy to apply yourself, mainly due to its harmlessness to health. To achieve an optimum result, it is important to follow the 4 steps below:

Step 1 – Preparing the material
Before applying the impregnation, it must be ensured that the material to be impregnated is completely cleaned and dried to ensure an optimum adhesive base for the impregnation to be applied.

Step 2 – Applying the impregnation
The impregnation solutions are applied by spraying. It is important to ensure that the coating is applied evenly and completely to the material to be impregnated. Using the spray bottle, the solution should be sprayed evenly onto the material at a distance of around 20-30 cm until the entire surface is covered. When applying, also observe the instructions given in the safety data sheet.

Step 3 – Drying the coated material
Once the coating solution has been fully applied, the treated material should be given sufficient time to dry so that the impregnation / waterproofing / proofing can develop its optimum effect and the material is protected in the long term. Ideally, drying should take place at room temperature.

Step 4 – Repeat the application as required
Even if PFC-free impregnation / waterproofing / waterproofing promises long-lasting protection, regular refreshing is required depending on wear and tear and external circumstances. If you notice that the water-repellent effect is fading, it is advisable to repeat the impregnation process. Using the example of a convertible, however, it should be perfectly sufficient to refresh twice a year before the start of the season and at the end of the season to achieve optimum results.

Can I drive through the car wash with an impregnated roof?

It is generally not advisable to drive through a car wash with an impregnated roof. Impregnating agents, especially water-repellent treatments, can be impaired by the strong cleaning agents and the water in the car washes.

This could cause the impregnation / waterproofing / proofing to degrade more quickly and thus impair its effectiveness. To ensure that the impregnation lasts longer and to avoid damage, it is therefore advisable to clean the impregnated material by hand or to choose alternative, gentler cleaning methods and to avoid going to the car wash.

Why do you need to impregnate regularly?

Regular repetition of impregnation / waterproofing / proofing is crucial to ensure the protective effect and longevity of the coated materials.

Over time, due to the influence of environmental factors such as rain and UV radiation, but also due to mechanical abrasion, the impregnation wears off piece by piece and becomes less effective.

By regularly refreshing the impregnation / waterproofing / proofing, the water-repellent and dirt-repellent properties are retained, keeping the material in perfect condition both aesthetically and functionally.
