What is liquid glass?
Liquid glass is an innovative surface coating option made from silicon dioxide molecules obtained from quartz sand. Dissolved in a mixture of water and alcohol, this form of glass is already liquid at room temperature, making it ideal for application.
After sealing the surface with the liquid glass, the solvents in it evaporate, causing the extremely thin and transparent glass coating to adhere to the material. The liquid glass layer is 500 times thinner than a human hair (approx. 100 nanometers). Due to the additional electrostatic properties of the liquid glass, it fuses firmly with the surface and forms a nano-smooth protective layer that offers little to no adhesion for dirt or liquids of any kind.
Advantages of liquid glass technology
The materials suitable for liquid glass technology, such as glass, metal, plastic, ceramics and even textiles, are at least as extensive as the advantages of this technology, including, among others:
Instructions for applying our liquid glass sealant
Regardless of the material in question, thorough preparation and careful application of the sealant are important for optimum results when sealing surfaces with liquid glass.
Depending on whether the surface is absorbent and soft or hard and non-absorbent, the individual sealing steps may vary slightly, for example because the liquid glass must penetrate much deeper into a wooden substrate to ensure optimum protection.
See below for step-by-step instructions on how to apply our liquid glass sealant.
Sealing with liquid glass in 3 steps
Step 1 - Material preparation through thorough cleaning
Take sufficient time for residue-free cleaning before applying the sealant to ensure that the surface to be sealed has no residues such as dust, dirt, grease or oil. Pre-cleaning should be repeated at least twice and pure ethanol should be used in the final step to achieve the optimum cleaning result.
Step 2 - Applying the liquid glass sealant
After proper cleaning, the liquid glass coating is carefully applied. To do this, immerse the material to be sealed completely in the liquid glass or, when sealing by spray application, brush or paint roller, make sure that you cover the entire surface with the liquid glass solution. In the case of absorbent surfaces such as wood, particular care should be taken to apply a sufficient quantity of liquid glass sealer to ensure complete cross-linking of the SiO2 molecules.
Step 3 - Curing the sealant
In the third and final step, the sealant takes effect by curing the liquid glass on the surface depending on the material. Depending on the material properties of the surface, 12 to 24 hours must be allowed for the curing process. During this period, the treated surface should not be exposed to premature stress or weathering.
Areas of application for liquid glass
Liquid glass is a surface coating that is widely used in many industries due to its protective properties. Below you will find some examples of applications.
Liquid glass in medicine and healthcare:
- for the sterilization of medical devices
- for disinfecting surfaces and instruments in hospitals
Liquid glass in the automotive industry:
- as paint protection – protects against weathering, UV rays and micro-scratches
- as window protection – creates lotus effect for easier cleaning and better visibility
Liquid glass in the textile industry:
- as a water repellent – to make fabrics waterproof and dirt-repellent
Liquid glass in the construction industry:
- as a protective coating – to give typical surfaces in the construction industry more durability and corrosion protection, including concrete and metal parts, but also wood or ceramic surfaces
Liquid glass in other areas:
- in electrical engineering – as insulation to protect electrical components from unwanted moisture ingress and other external influences
- for glass and ceramics – to increase scratch resistance and repel dirt
Historical background
The history of surface sealing with liquid glass dates back to the 19th century. Back then, the French chemist Ebelmen discovered the sol-gel process, in which a solid material with glass-like properties is created from a liquid solution, but these early discoveries were not yet used for actual sealants.
In the late 1950s, Schott-Glaswerke took up this basic research and developed it further. Their efforts revealed the possibilities of sol-gel technology and they achieved their first successes in the practical application of liquid glass as a surface coating.
Germany has played a key role in the continuous improvement of liquid glass sealants. Thanks to continuous optimization, highly reliable products are now available that can seal almost any type of surface to provide protection against scratches, corrosion, dirt and other environmental influences.
