read moreWhen hiking, sailing and other outdoor adventures, it’s all about the right clothing. If it is reliable in wind and weather, it will safely keep out wind, rain and moisture. If the jacket, pants and shoes are tight and at the same time breathable, they offer the best protection and ensure good comfort on the skin while on the move. With a DWR waterproofing rainwater or spray simply rolls off the jacket, much like a lotus flower. Find out everything you need to know about a durable water repellent waterproofing here.
The three letters DWR stand for the abbreviation “Durable Water Repellent”. If an outer fabric is equipped with it, it is water repellent and thus stays dry. The waterproofing prevents individual drops from becoming a film of water covering the entire surface. The water beads off the surface, runs down and drips off. In the case of rainwear, the finish ensures breathability: the waterproof membrane incorporated into the garments can wick away moisture from the inside despite rain and wetness from the outside. New clothing is manufactured with water-repellent waterproofing: For this, the fabrics are impregnated by jets or dipped into a bath with DWR and excess waterproofing is removed by machine. Clothing made in this way is permanently waterproof. How long this waterproofing reliably allows drops to bead off depends on the particular use: the layer suffers under the straps of the backpack or from dirt and washing. If the drops no longer bead off, reimpregnation is advisable.

Get in touchA little chemistry is necessary for a detailed explanation of the ingredients. In addition to kerosene and wax emulsions, fluorocarbons and silicones are also used in the manufacture of outdoor clothing. All active ingredients provide very good permanent protection. Fluorocarbons are also known as polyfluorinated surfactants and work reliably. They not only protect the wearer of the clothing from moisture, but are also dirt-repellent. Because the membranes processed on the inside react sensitively to contamination by oil or grease, the fluorocarbons also protect against this. Because they are considered questionable despite their positive properties, many manufacturers are looking for real alternatives. A good alternative is offered by our Nanoflex Repel Eco: Highly effective system for industrial finishing of all types of fibers for highly wash-stable water repellency and soil repellency of aqueous stains. The chemicals used in DWR-waterproofing ensure that the clothing treated with them is simultaneously waterproof from the outside and breathable from the inside. Manufacturers use different substances for this purpose. Fluorocarbons, which include both perfluorinated and polyfluorinated chemicals, or PFCs, are a group that now includes more than 8,000 different substances. Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS) and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) are just two of the best known. They are produced artificially. Because they tend to remain persistent and are not easily degraded over time, they are now found in all regions of the world. While some fluorocarbons are classified as completely harmless, others are considered rather problematic. Yet fluorocarbons make waterproofing in particular reliable and durable. They allow rain and moisture to bead up on the outside and even keep greasy dirt out. In waterproofing without fluorocarbons, the waterproofing are made of silicones or other polymers. Unfortunately, these do not provide as excellent protection against greasy and oily soils. To fill this gap in the market, we have developed PFC-free products based on hyperbranched polymers: Nanoflex L-Care, Nanoflex Wash-On C0 and Nanoflex DWR CO-ECO. Do you have an appetite for the future of waterproofing?
Drops and splashes don’t matter, a shower does, heavy rain even more so. Don’t turn outdoor into an adventure.
Once it has rained, cats, birds and deer are dry faster than you can look. Nano-Care With waterproofing brand you can do the same.
Wherever cleanliness is a top priority, waterproofing does a great job thanks to its dirt-repellent effect. No matter whether on stone or textiles.
If a jacket is labeled “waterproof”, you can be sure that you will stay dry in any case, even if the rain lasts longer. Inside, a corresponding membrane ensures that the waterproof jacket is really waterproof. If the jacket or pants are classified as waterproof or water-repellent, water and dirt will also bead up on the surface. However, if the rain lasts longer, the clothing will soak through over time. The hydrostatic water column is an international standard used by the textile industry to identify waterproof, water-resistant and water-repellent clothing. Use the DWR waterproofing from Nano-Care, to get a durable water repellent waterproofing and enjoy a new outdoor experience. Found interest in our DWR waterproofing ?

If the jacket or pants are permanently impregnated, they cannot become waterlogged even in heavy rain. The clothing remains light, warm and always offers the necessary freedom of movement. Rain jackets and rain pants with waterproof and at the same time breathable membranes can only show their advantages if the outer waterproofing is also perfect. Only then does the water bead up from the outside. If, on the other hand, the outer fabric becomes saturated with water, which experts call “wetting out,” the membrane is impervious. Then it can no longer release the water vapor formed by the body to the outside.
If the function is to be maintained for a long time, clothing made of Gore-Tex, Sympatex, eVent or other modern materials requires the right treatment. Everything you need to know can be found in the care instructions: Washing is uncomplicated and simple. You can simply put the vapor-permeable yet wind- and waterproof membrane fabrics in the washing machine. To ensure that dirt, salt particles and detergent residues are well removed from the clothing, these pieces must be washed relatively often. Only then will it work with vapor diffusion through the incorporated membrane as intended by the manufacturer. Before putting the jacket or pants in the washing machine, all zippers and Velcro closures should be closed. As a rule, the gentle wash cycle at 30 degrees Celsius is sufficient. Use a mild or special detergent, but without any fabric softener additive or extra fabric softener. A short spin is sufficient.
Get in touchSweat contains salts along with many other substances: you can simply lick your palm and check. While the moisture from the sweat diffuses out through the membrane, the salt crystallizes into large crystals. These stay inside the jacket and pants because they can’t fit through the tiny membrane pores. If the salt crystals remain in the fabric, they can attack the material over time, making it porous and thus unable to perform its function. Likewise, all residues of perfume, creams, lotion or sunscreen should be regularly removed from the fibers by washing.
Get in touchUnless the label says otherwise, you should tumble dry your functional clothing after washing. The lowest setting is sufficient to reactivate the waterproofing. If you do not have a dryer, it is sufficient to iron the clothes on the lowest setting of your iron. However, even with the most careful treatment of the clothes, the waterproofing of the manufacturer wears off over time. If the drops no longer bead off the fabric but are sucked into it, reimpregnation is due. This is the right way to care for functional clothing:
Functional clothing for use in wind and weather is downright high-tech. The membrane inside the clothing has tiny but numerous pores. If it is warmer inside the jacket than outside, the wearer sweats under stress. As soon as the water vapor inside the jacket exceeds a certain pressure, the tiny molecules diffuse to the outside and you continue to feel comfortable in your clothing. The pores are designed to allow water vapor to pass from the inside to the outside, while at the same time keeping the rain out. If the rain cannot penetrate the fabric and the sweat diffuses to the outside, the clothing is waterproof. Finally, a waterproofing perfects the fabric, water beads up on the outside and cannot penetrate the fabric.
Get in touchIf the original waterproofing wears off, it’s time for a refresher. If you want to refresh your clothes yourself waterproof, you can either spray it on the fabric with Nanoflex Tex2, Nanoflex THD or Nanoflex L-Care. Or you can wash the garment with Nanoflex Wash-On New or Nanoflex Wash-On C0.
If you want to wash in the fresh waterproofing, all the rinse chambers of the washing machine must be meticulously cleaned. Then put the freshly washed jacket or pants in the washing drum and add the amount indicated on the package of waterproofing. Wash the clothes as indicated on the care instructions at 40 degrees Celsius on the gentle cycle and then dry everything in the dryer on the lowest setting. You can also hang the clothes and let them air dry. Jackets or pants made of GoreTex or Sympatex, on the other hand, should be impregnated specifically on the outside and there at the seams, shoulders and all wear points with spray. This preserves the permeability of water vapor better. If the waterproofing spray is to provide a robust waterproofing, you should carefully follow the manufacturer’s instructions. There it is listed how long the waterproofing spray must act and dry. While it is sufficient for some sprays if the fabric dries for an hour in the fresh air, others must first be activated by heat.
Tip: Always carry out the waterproofing with spray outdoors.
Get in touchWhether you waterproof your jacket, pants or backpack with a spray or by washing waterproof, depends on the material used. Lined jackets and membranes without pores, for example, can be impregnated well using a spray. Membranes with micropores can be treated both with a waterproofing spray, but also in the washing machine. It is important that you follow the care instructions of the respective manufacturer. Then, after successful waterproofing, the water beads off the jacket or pants again and the climate in the clothing remains comfortable.
